Opened in 1827 this is the oldest pastry shop in Budapest. Very popular during summer with tourists. Famous for cakes and pastries by Szamos family that owns the café. The pastry shop went through many ownership changes during the years. Then, following World War II it was nationalized and the owner at the time, Ferenc Tóth, was branded an exploiter. It wasn’t until 1990 that it was again privatized.

Originally opened in 1887. Was favored by artists and writers as café was open 24 hrs. This particular café was founded in 1999 to rehouse the old Central Café and to preserve the ‘grand café’ character while meeting current restaurant expectations.
